Aside from the main end of tax year date of 5th April, there are several other key dates throughout the year that both employed and self-employed workers need to be aware of.

Here we outline the key dates for the 2020/2021 tax year.

PAYE KEY TAX DATES:

5 April 2020
End of the last tax year and deadline for claiming your PAYE tax refund for the 2015/16 tax year.

6 April 2020
First day of the new tax year 2020/21.

31 May 2020
Copies of 2019/20 P60 documents issued to employees.

6 July 2020
Copies of 2019/20 P11d documents issued to employees.
Last date for agreeing payment settlement agreements for 2018/19 if applicable.

6 April 2021
End of tax year 2020/21

SELF-ASSESSED KEY TAX DATES:

31 January 2020 (midnight)
Deadline for online self-assessment tax returns for 2018/19 tax year.
Deadline for paying tax bill for tax year ending 5 April 2018/19.
Deadline for 1st payment on account for tax year 2019/20.

5 April 2020
Deadline for claiming tax overpaid for the 2015/16 tax year under self-assessment.

6 April 2020
First day of the new tax year 2020/21.
Time to gather detailed documents for your 2019/20 tax return.

31 May 2020
Self-employed people with employees must issue their 2019/20 P60 certificate.

31 July 2020
Deadline for 2nd payment on account for tax year ending 5 April 2020.

5 October 2020
Deadline to register with the HMRC if you became self-employed or started receiving income from property. You should submit a form CWF1 for self-employment or form SA1 for non-self-employed income to HMRC.

31 October 2020 (midnight)
Deadline for paper self-assessment returns for 2019/20 tax year.

30 December 2020
Deadline for online submission of self-assessment tax returns for year ending 5 April 2019 for HMRC to collect employment or pension income tax through PAYE tax codes if less than £3,000 is owed.

31 January 2021 (midnight)
Deadline for online self-assessment tax returns for 2019/20 tax year.
Deadline for paying tax bill for tax year ending 5 April 2019/20.

5 April 2021
End of tax year 2020/21.

Exceptions:
– Submit your online return by 30 December if you want HMRC to automatically collect tax you owe from your wages and pension. You must be eligible.
– HMRC must receive a paper tax return by 31 January if you’re a trustee of a registered pension scheme or a non-resident company. You cannot send a return online.
